The Role of Amino Acids in Your Body

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are involved in nearly every biological process in your body. Your body uses twenty different amino acids to build the thousands of proteins that make up your tissues, enzymes, hormones, and immune molecules. Nine amino acids are classified as essential because your body cannot produce them and they must come from your diet. These are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine. Leucine plays a particularly important role in stimulating muscle protein synthesis. Branched-chain amino acids including leucine, isoleucine, and valine are popular among athletes for their potential to reduce exercise fatigue and support muscle recovery. Tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates mood and sleep. Animal proteins contain all essential amino acids in adequate amounts. Plant proteins may be low in one or more essential amino acids, but eating a variety of plant protein sources throughout the day provides all the amino acids your body needs.
